1. Who is your mentor?
My mentor is Michelle Ketterer. 2. What type of art do they make? She makes many different kinds of arts but particularly likes drawing and painting. 3. I think my mentor will help me to make my art better by teaching me better techniques and giving me critiques and methods to fix my mistakes. I want my mentor to tell me how to improve my art. What warm up was the most helpful during this unit and why?
The most helpful warm up for me was the cubes that demonstrated the various ways to shade with pen. Not only was it helpful when I was deciding how to shade my pen drawing, it helped me practice the various kinds. In the end, I think I could have done a better job on my pen drawing by adding some more stipling. I also think it could have been a better choice to cross hatch because that is my shading strength in terms of making it actually look darker. Define composition and value. - Composition: the placement or arrangement of visual elements - Value: the lightness or darkness of tones or colors Pros and Cons of each medium (pen, charcoal, pencil): Pen: The pros of pen include the drawing being permanent and dark. I really liked the contrast between the white paper and the dark ink. On the other hand, if I messed up I wouldn't be able to fix it. I also found it particularly challenging when shading to make it look realistical. I felt like I had trouble making the shadow actually look like it was getting darker. Charcoal: This medium was very cool because the background was dark, as opposed to light like the other two. Charcoal allowed for very good contrast and the smudges made my cleats look dirty, which they are. However, the medium smudged and it was very hard for me to erase smaller portions, making my drawing very inexact. Pencil: The pencil drawing was my favorite. I really liked how I was able to make the shadows realistic due to the various drawing pencils. The smudging tool also helped to smooth my entire drawing over. One con to pencils was the smudging on the paper and the depth was hard to capture, though I think this has to do with my skills, not the medium. The artist I chose to focus on is named Slava Semeniuta. He goes by the penname of Local Preacher. He is both an artist and a photographer, but I am particularly inspired by his photographs. Semeniuta was born in Siberia but has lived in Belarus for the majority of his life. He focuses on neon colors found in nature - something that's rare. He says he loves things that look "cosmic". I am particularly interested in his work for multiple reasons. For one, I love the idea of photography, especially taking pictures of completely ordinary things and capturing them in a way that makes them seem extraordinary. The colors of these pictures also drew me in. Not only are these ordinary objects, they are made unique with bright colors.
